Scholarships

It’s been a week or so since I've thought much about my study abroad trip. Well…that would be a lie. I think about it ALL. THE. TIME. But not the really serious stuff such as: how much is it going to cost, where do I go to get my visa, when are applications due, etc. Usually I’m just imagining myself drinking a mocha at a cafe with a view of the Alps.

The reality of it is, that study abroad costs money. Personally, I know quite a bit about undergraduate student loans because I work at my campuses financial aid office. Ladies and gents: debt is ugly

So, before spring break got in the way of all my productivity, I had been researching scholarships. My University offers some highly competitive scholarships for study abroad students based on destination. Unfortunately, a lot of the deadlines for those have already passed. Lucky for me there is one left that I can still try for! I also checked out resources from my study abroad program. I’m going through an agency that partners with my university, but isn't hosted by the university itself. Depending on how study abroad works at your college, this may be different for you.

Now I’m back to the grind filling out applications, writing essays, and getting professor recommendations  My advice to you, future adventurers, is to APPLY EARLY. I kid you not when I say a year in advance is a good time to start looking. Write a good solid essay, and tweak it to work for multiple applications. Bug your professors as much as possible to get rec’s in on time. And if there is an early bird application date- aim for that one!

Bon Chance!
